Piano lesson on Fm & Db over a softly flowing rhythm: the secret to a gentle, protective feeling

This lesson takes you through the steps to develop some improvising skills over 2 gorgeous chords based on F minor and D flat major with a delicious, gently flowing rhythm over an elastic groove. Truly expressing our deep feelings with music is something that is very important in today’s world. Connecting with the deepest source of meaning and losing our fear and expressive inhibitions can open up a musical realm that is incredibly powerful and transformative.

The long journey home

This improvisation is a cathartic piece of music, exploring the feelings of surrender and discipline – moving forwards to recover our strength at times of weakness, or maybe to find even greater strength than ever before. Improvising music always brings me solace and escape from the daily struggle, by dropping into innermost feelings and letting them pour out.

Bright red on velvet black – piano music to reveal the magic of determined transformation

In this piece from my project Butterfly, I go to a deep place where struggles are no longer negative but fuel for extraordinary transformation and ultimate freedom. Effort, discipline and determination are energies that generate metamorphosis and ultimate emergence into a state of ease and flow, and music as the language of such deep feelings is a wonderful way to inspire ourselves to overcome difficulties and thrive.

A romantic piano improvisation full of beautiful darkness

This spontaneous improvisation of romantic piano music is a journey from a feeling bleakness to a magical place that alchemically changes the bleakness into something beautiful. Music has the extraordinary power to transform the experience of darkness and pain into something transcendent. In this sense music is a cure or escape from despair.

Improvisation – From hesitancy to a place of calm resolution

The initial state of feeling hesitant and unsettled is the starting point for this improvised piano piece which goes through the looking glass of these everyday feelings to discover a magical place of calm resolve and deep peace.

Improvised piano – turning everyday sadness & uncertainty into the magic of compassion & wonder

When I make up this kind of romantic music on the spot, I’m using the language of music to explore, evoke or enter a transformed state, an altered state of consciousness, if you like. Sharing it is more of a conversational thing than a performance – as I often say, I feel more like a stand up musician. I use whatever feelings happen to be present as a starting point, however mundane or everyday they might be – today, I was feeling a little sad and uncertain about the world (well, who doesn’t?) – and from this starting point, the music seems to go deeper into the feelings, deeper into the shadows, to generate a kind of alchemy, where those feelings become beautiful. They may not be happy, certain feelings, but they are feelings of great compassion and love, acceptance and wonder.

A short direct comparison between Pianoteq v8 and v9

In this short video, I put the NY Steinway D Classical presets in Pianoteq 8 and 9 side by side to see what the differences are! I did this because it was requested and it does make some sense. The differences are not easily measured and are quite subjective…

A gentle, dark piano piece – Beyond Pain to Bliss

In this video I talk about how improvising music is as natural as speaking, and it’s nice to do even when you don’t feel well, as it has the power to make you feel better!

Pianoteq v9 – rich, yet transparent – Shigeru Kawai

Here is another piano from Pianoteq v9. I’m particularly impressed by the richness of the colours and the transparency of the sound.
