I currently have 2 solo piano projects:
PHIL BEST – Classical piano
I believe that music is a universal language that transcends cultural differences of time and place. So I aim to play classical piano repertoire in a fresh, vivid and innovative way using beautiful pianos from the past and present. I have developed a style of playing that rejects current fashions for self-conscious point-making or pretentious over-interpretation. I favour instead a more spontaneous, naturally phrased, emotionally connected and accessible approach. I want to demonstrate how the piano music of the great composers like Chopin, Mozart, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Liszt, Brahms etc. is as relevant now as it ever was. My performances often include stylistic improvisations, which are not only great fun, but they also encourage me to take risks and play to the outer edges of my fluent musicianship and technique so that I can communicate the musical messages in a way that is never contrived but always immediate and powerful.
PJ BEST – Solo piano improvisations & compositions
My improvisations and compositions, influenced by classical, jazz and pop styles, are very emotionally connected musical stories that evoke intense atmosphere and vivid impressions. Sometimes dramatic and passionate, often very reflective and introspective, I love making music that is as immersive as it is intimate. This work is very personal: I improvise and compose this material at the piano as a spontaneous act of meditation: it helps me make sense of living in this complex and confusing world. I share it as an invitation to anyone who also longs for the solace and catharsis that music can offer, to join me on this journey of inner transformation, through the extraordinary sound-world of the piano.
